WHY AUSTRALIAN FIRMS ARE CONSIDERING ALTERNATIVES TO IVO AI

Ivo AI has established itself as a well-funded legal AI platform, having raised $55 million at a $355 million valuation. But for Australian law firms, there are compelling reasons to look elsewhere.

1. Ivo AI explicitly doesn't build for law firms.

This isn't speculation—it's their stated strategy. In their Series B announcement, Ivo declared: "Ivo is designed for the unique needs of in-house legal teams, not law firms."

Their product roadmap, feature set, and sales motion are all oriented toward corporate legal departments at companies like Canva, Uber, and Reddit—not private practice. That means:

  • No focus on matter management, time recording, or billable hour optimisation
  • No integration with practice management systems like Actionstep, Clio, or Smokeball
  • No support for barristers or the unique workflows of private practice
  • Enterprise-only pricing that excludes solo practitioners and small firms

If you're a law firm, you're not Ivo's customer—you're an afterthought.

"I looked at Harvey, I looked at various other AI tools, and for a startup like mine, it was not affordable. I had to sign up for a year or two, and it was simply not within my wheelhouse to do it at that point in time."

Principal Director, Sperling Legal
"Last financial year, our firm's billings increased by 35%... a solo practitioner can now do a lot more high-quality work and compete with firms with five or ten lawyers."

2. US jurisdiction means potential US government access—regardless of where your data is stored.

Ivo is a US-incorporated company headquartered in San Francisco, subject to US jurisdiction including the CLOUD Act (18 U.S.C. § 2713), which explicitly empowers American authorities to compel US companies to produce data within their control "regardless of whether such communication, record, or other information is located within or outside of the United States."

In November 2025, a US federal court ordered OpenAI to produce 20 million ChatGPT conversations in a copyright lawsuit—users weren't notified, and there was no way to opt out.

While Ivo does not publicly advertise Australian data residency options, AI Legal Assistant is an Australian company, hosted on Australian infrastructure, governed by Australian law. Your client data stays under the same legal framework you're already required to understand and comply with.

"I could ask questions in other areas of law and it could provide me a starting point... It has the knowledge of a 4-5 PQE lawyer across all different areas of law."

3. No Australian legal research—at all.

Ivo AI cannot search Australian case law. It cannot access AustLII. It is not trained on Commonwealth legislation, state Acts, or Australian court decisions.

AI Legal Assistant was designed from the ground up by Australian lawyers for Australian legal workflows. Our AI understands the nuances of state-specific variations, Australian court procedures, and local filing requirements.

4. Contract review is only part of what lawyers do.

Ivo AI does one thing: contract review and intelligence. That's it. If you need to research Australian case law, prepare litigation documents, generate legal chronologies, or draft letters of advice—Ivo can't help you.

AI Legal Assistant supports the full spectrum of legal work: document review, drafting, research, chronologies, transcription, and more—across litigation, commercial, family, property, personal injury, and construction law.

5. Enterprise complexity that slows adoption.

Ivo requires significant configuration before it's useful. You need to create "playbooks"—detailed specifications of your review requirements—before the AI can review contracts effectively.

AI Legal Assistant was designed for immediate productivity. Our one-click automations mean that if a lawyer can upload a document and click a button, the AI handles the rest. No prompt engineering required.

"We've come off the end of what was one of our most successful financial years... I attribute a significant portion of that to the speed at which we're able to now do the work."
